Auckland music institution Marbecks has announced the closure of its physical store after more than 90 years.
The record shop announced it will be closing its doors at the Queens Arcade location and transitioning to operate exclusively as an online store.
“Marbecks will continue to operate online, offering our exceptional range of new releases and the extensive collections of pop, jazz and classical that music lovers have come to trust,” Marbecks said in a Facebook post.
“The move to an online store marks the beginning of a new chapter for us, ensuring that you will continue to access the best in music, delivered straight to your door. We will also be only a call away for those who prefer to order by phone or check in for a chat.”
Marbecks has also announced plans to hold special pop-up events at festivals and music gatherings across the country to preserve the store’s spirit and offer an in-person experience for music lovers.

With the transition to an online-only store, Marbecks acknowledged that they cannot take their entire stock with them. To celebrate their long history in Queens Arcade, a major sale began on Monday, September 1, offering 25% off all in-stock items both in-store and online.
Roger Marbeck, a founding family member, said moving to an online-only store is both a way to carry forward their rich legacy and an opportunity to adapt and grow with the evolving retail landscape.
“Marbecks has been a home for music lovers for over 90 years in Queens Arcade, and while closing our physical doors is bittersweet, our mission remains the same – to share music that inspires and brings people together.
“The online store lets us carry that legacy forward in a way that reaches more people than ever.”
