Labour MP Adrian Rurawhe has revealed plans to retire from politics next month.

He said he spent the summer reflecting on his whānau and church commitments, and retiring now will let him engage more deeply.

Rurawhe has served in Parliament for over a decade, beginning in 2014 as the MP for Te Tai Hauāuru. He was Speaker of the House of Representatives from August 2022 until December 2023.

His final day will be Waitangi Day, after which Georgie Dansey will replace him.

“I want to express my gratitude to the people of Te Tai Hauāuru, the Labour movement, and the countless individuals and communities I have served over the past twelve years,” Rurawhe said.

“I also want to acknowledge my whānau for their continued support.”

“I would never have become an MP without them, and I will be forever grateful.”

Labour leader Chris Hipkins praised Rurawhe as a figure respected across the House during his time as Speaker, a valued Labour team member, and a passionate advocate for Māori.

“We will miss him and wish him all the very best as he moves away from the political arena,” Hipkins said.
