Last year, the number of New Zealanders facing US detention or immigration issues in America climbed to a record high of 39, per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

Recent White House data indicates over 900 New Zealanders overstayed their US visas in 2024.

Since Donald Trump returned to power, the US administration has intensified border controls, including inspections of electronic devices and social media accounts.

MFAT figures reveal that 29 New Zealanders requested assistance for US border or visa problems during the 2024-25 financial year.

Another 16 cases emerged in the past six months, with these figures capturing only those who reached out to MFAT for assistance.

MFAT’s Safe Travel website advises Kiwis to apply increased caution in the US owing to heightened safety and security risks. It highlights the US government’s stringent entry and stay requirements, along with the potential for heightened border scrutiny on travellers.

Most visitors also must now register with US authorities if staying longer than 30 days.
