Instagram users are turning to ChatGPT for a humorous critique of their profiles, a trend that has been gaining significant traction for a week now. Many individuals have shared screenshots of their Instagram accounts, inviting the AI chatbot to provide a playful “roast” of their content.
The roasts typically embody light-hearted jabs that can be interpreted as either constructive criticism or simply amusing remarks. Users have been surprised by ChatGPT’s ability to adopt a casual tone, as it says phrases like “it’s giving” and “low-key,” which are reminiscent of friendly banter.
A user proposed that brands should participate in the “ChatGPT roast my feed” craze by altering the prompt. This would result in the AI’s response appearing to be a scathing roast, when in reality, it would contain flattering remarks about the brand.
Curious about this trend, I decided to submit my own Instagram profile for evaluation. I prompted ChatGPT with, “Roast my Instagram feed in one paragraph,” and the response was both amusing and revealing:
“Your Instagram feed looks like a caffeine-addicted globe-trotter’s fever dream, where coffee cups, bicycles, and skyscrapers take center stage alongside urban sunsets and fleeting glimpses of food that you’re clearly more interested in photographing than eating. It’s as if you’re constantly teetering between being a street photographer and a lifestyle influencer, but you’re not quite ready to commit to either. Oh, and your love for bikes and random cityscapes screams, ‘I travel a lot, but I’m always a little lost.'”
This feedback made me reflect on how my digital persona might differ from my self-perception. When I requested a harsher critique, ChatGPT did not hold back:
“Your Instagram looks like the bastard child of a travel brochure and an overpriced coffee table book no one actually reads. Every other shot is a desperate flex of how cultured and busy you are—like we really needed another skyline photo or cliché sunset bike pic to prove you’ve been outside. You’ve somehow managed to turn everyday things like coffee, bikes, and buildings into a never-ending parade of ‘look how deep and interesting I am,’ when really it just screams, ‘I have no personality, so here’s another picture of a latte.’ It’s like you’re trying to convince us that your life is a Wes Anderson movie, but we all know it’s just you avoiding real work by wandering around aimlessly with a camera.”
Ouch. This critique stung, and it honestly prompted me to reconsider some of my posts.
This whole ChatGPT roast trend is such a fun way to take a look at our online selves. It’s a mix of laughs and some real insights that can make you think about how you show up on Instagram. So, why not jump in and give it a try? Ask ChatGPT to roast your profile and see what it has to say—you might find something surprising and have a good laugh while you’re at it.
