Swedish furniture giant IKEA has officially opened a 20,000 square meter warehouse facility at The Landing Business Park in Māngere.

Starting May, the new facility constructed and owned by Auckland Airport will begin receiving shipments of products destined for IKEA’s Sylvia Park store, which is scheduled to open next year.

“Completion of the first IKEA New Zealand external warehouse marks a pivotal milestone in our market entry and has been the result of significant collaboration between IKEA, our construction partner Colliers, and the Auckland Airport team,” IKEA New Zealand fulfilment manager Adrian Pidgeon said.

“With the building now complete, many parts of the business are working together to ensure a great IKEA customer experience for New Zealanders supported by readily available products, no matter where they are located or how they choose to shop,” he added.

The facility has the capacity to handle approximately 8,000 to 10,000 cubic meters of inventory each year.

Daniel Byrne, the head of property development at Auckland Airport, expressed enthusiasm about continuing to support IKEA’s operations as the company establishes itself in New Zealand.

A few months ago, IKEA announced the opening of its first store in New Zealand, set to debut at Sylvia Park in Auckland by late 2025.

The store will span approximately 34,000 square meters and will feature three floors, including a ground-level car park. It will also house a Swedish restaurant and bistro serving traditional dishes.

IKEA New Zealand chief executive Mirja Viinanen said there is a gap in the market for affordable, high-quality furnishings, and she believes that IKEA’s entry could lead to lower prices.

“The vision of IKEA is that we like to create a better life for people, which means people with thinner wallets,” Viinanen said.
