IKEA plans to enhance its delivery processes by introducing the next generation of drone technology, featuring sophisticated AI features to support its employees. Following a successful trial at the Winterslag distribution centre in Belgium, IKEA will extend this programme across Europe and North America, including a new distribution centre in Perryville, Maryland.
The drones will operate around the clock to manage stock inventories and optimise warehouse procedures. They are equipped with advanced artificial intelligence algorithms and obstacle detection systems. “The drones use cutting-edge technology to photograph and monitor product locations, navigating with precision and avoiding obstacles,” stated Parag Parekh, Global Chief Digital Officer of IKEA Retail.
This technology is designed to alleviate the physical demands on staff by automating inventory management tasks, thereby improving accuracy and allowing employees to focus on other aspects of their roles.
IKEA’s commitment to deploying these drones is part of a broader strategy to modernise its warehouses and enhance employee wellbeing. By taking over repetitive and strenuous tasks, the drones are expected to improve health and job satisfaction among IKEA’s workforce, while complying with all relevant data privacy and safety standards.
