According to the government’s latest Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries report, next year’s food and fibre exports are projected to hit a record $62 billion, surpassing this year’s $60.4 billion high.

Meat and wool revenues are projected to increase by 7%, horticulture by 5%, forestry by 2%, and dairy by 1%.

“From meat and wool to kiwifruit and cherries, our producers are remarkable. The world wants New Zealand’s high-quality, sustainable, safe food and fibre,” Agriculture and Forestry Minister Todd McClay said.

“The sector is well positioned to capitalise on robust demand and strong prices, supported by good growing conditions and higher production in most areas.”

New Zealand’s food and fibre make up roughly 83% of the country’s goods exports.

McClay said the government is supporting the sector by reducing red tape, enhancing producer returns, providing tools and technology to address agricultural emissions, and funding rural health initiatives.

“One in every seven people works in food and fibre,” McClay said. “A successful sector means thriving communities, a growing economy and a prosperous New Zealand.”
