Loyalty scheme Flybuys bids farewell at the end of 2024 after almost 30 years of rewarding Kiwis.
When Will Flybuys End in New Zealand?
The Flybuys programme will end on 31 December 2024. Loyalty New Zealand, the company that administers Flybuys, emphasises that customers can still earn Flybuys until 11:59 p.m. on October 31 and will have until 11:59 p.m. on December 31 to redeem their Flybuys points.
Lizzy Ryley, the chief executive officer of Loyalty NZ, said the landscape for loyalty schemes continues to change rapidly. Businesses now have greater access to technology, enabling them to create their own customised loyalty programmes.
As a response, Flybuys underwent some changes in 2020, hoping to enhance its appeal to younger consumers. The new programme offers members a broader selection of rewards, such as New World Dollars and fuel discounts.
However, these improvements were not enough to save the brand.
“The Flybuys model of a services and retailer alliance has run its course,” Ryley said.
“We’re incredibly proud of what Flybuys has achieved over the past 28 years. It’s been a privilege to be a part of so many New Zealanders’ lives, helping them save money and enjoy rewards from their favourite brands.”

Flybuys was originally launched in September 1996 as a travel rewards programme that allowed customers to “fly through their shopping” with flights via Ansett and Air New Zealand. Currently, the company allows its 1.8 million active members to enjoy petrol discounts, convert points to New World Dollars, and redeem points for items in its loyalty shop.
In addition to Flybuys, Loyalty New Zealand will transition towards closure. Insurer IAG New Zealand has agreed to acquire certain assets of Loyalty NZ and will also extend employment offers to approximately one-third of Loyalty NZ’s staff.
