Echo Technology, the country’s leading e-waste recycler, is buying BMS, a specialist in secure data disposal plus refurbishing and reselling end-of-life IT gear.

The acquisition price remains undisclosed.

Echo Technology chief executive Patrick Moynahan said the partnership would establish New Zealand’s top full-service provider for IT and e-waste lifecycles.

“We’re committed to building long‑term capability for sustainable technology lifecycle services and e‑waste processing in Aotearoa New Zealand, and this acquisition is a substantial step towards that ambition,” he said.

“Together, Echo and BMS repurpose more than 150,000 IT assets for resale and process over four million kilograms of electronic waste each year.”

BMS founder Stephen Westcott-Jones will gain a shareholder stake in Echo and join its board.

“The transaction will allow us to build on the strong foundations of BMS and take our customer offering to the next level by integrating with Echo,” he said.

Altered Capital—a local VC and private-equity firm, plus an existing Echo investor—brokered the deal and will stay invested in the merged entity.

The companies will integrate over the next 18 months while operating separately for now, with all existing customer contracts staying intact.

Moynahan said Echo would first boost household e-waste recycling through council partnerships and neighbourhood collection events, then scale up to corporate and government recovery/refurbishment.

The combined company also plans to open a new recycling facility in Christchurch to complement its existing plants in Auckland and Wellington.
