US fried chicken fast food giant Popeyes is set to open its first restaurant in New Zealand’s South Island, with a new location planned in Christchurch.

Tahua Properties Ltd. has submitted a resource consent application to construct a Popeyes restaurant opposite the Durham St New World supermarket, located between Moorhouse Avenue and Bath Street, along with a separate drive-through Starbucks café.

The developer requested that Christchurch City Council permit both chain restaurants to operate continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Each restaurant would accommodate 64 seated patrons and collectively share 27 parking spaces, including two designated for mobility access, along with six additional bicycle parking spots.

The site, which the developer has not yet acquired, is close to numerous popular retailers, including the South City Shopping Centre located just across Bath Street.

Nearby fast food options include Burger King and McDonald’s, both approximately 600 metres away.

Popeyes offers chicken dishes in both mild and spicy varieties. The brand, which was born in the United States, made its debut in New Zealand in South Auckland in April last year.

At the time of the opening, the company announced plans to establish 10 stores nationwide within the year.
