A clinical trial from King’s College London and the New Zealand College Chiropractic Research Committee has shown promising results in improving mental health and overall quality of life through chiropractic care.

The findings, published in Brain Sciences, reveal neurophysiological shifts following treatment, suggesting a potential link between chiropractic care and better mental well-being.

Clinical Trial Demonstrates Positive Results

The study involved 76 participants suffering from chronic low back pain, comparing the effects of chiropractic care with usual treatment methods.

Researchers examined various factors, including brain activity, sleep quality, pain levels, and self-reported mental health outcomes. The findings suggest that chiropractic care may offer a natural, non-invasive method for addressing both physical and mental health concerns.

Dr. Jenna Duehr, a chiropractor and spokesperson for the New Zealand Chiropractors’ Association (NZCA), emphasised the significance of these results:

“This is an important clinical trial looking at numerous outcomes following four weeks of chiropractic care. It particularly highlights the potential benefits to mental health, which is the first study to demonstrate these improvements following chiropractic care in a clinical trial.”

Improved Mental Health and Quality of Life

One of the most compelling aspects of the study is its findings on mental health. Participants who received chiropractic care reported significant reductions in anxiety, depression, and fatigue. These improvements were not only statistically significant but also clinically meaningful, leading to an overall enhancement in quality of life.

Additionally, sleep quality improved among those undergoing chiropractic treatment, particularly in the light sleep stage, which is essential for physical and mental recovery. Participants also reported experiencing less pain intensity and interference in daily activities, further contributing to their well-being.

Brain Activity Changes Revealed by Chiropractic Care

Recent research has turned a spotlight on the neurophysiological effects of chiropractic care, revealing surprising changes in brain activity. The study employed cutting-edge EEG scans, showing shifts in the Default Mode Network (DMN)—a brain area linked to emotional balance, self-awareness, and chronic pain.

These alterations raise new questions about the potential cognitive and neurological benefits of chiropractic treatments, suggesting a broader influence on brain function than previously believed.

A Holistic Approach to Health

The findings from this new study are drawing attention to chiropractic care as a comprehensive approach to health, extending beyond pain relief and mobility. Instead of relying on medications or invasive procedures, chiropractic care focuses on optimising the nervous system. “This study reinforces what many chiropractors have observed in practice,” said Dr. Duehr.

“Chiropractic care is not just about addressing pain or improving mobility; it has far-reaching impacts on brain function and overall well-being.”

Breaking the Cycle of Chronic Pain and Mental Health

The study emphasises the often-overlooked connection between chronic pain and mental health issues, showing how they perpetuate a cycle of mutual aggravation. Chiropractic care’s ability to enhance sensory processing in the brain may provide much-needed relief for individuals caught in this cycle of pain and mental anguish.
