The Community Access Media Alliance (CAMA), also known as the Access Radio Network, has added new features to its accessmedia.nz site as of October 22, 2024, benefiting the diverse communities in New Zealand and addressing the growing demand for podcast content.
The primary goal of the upgrade is to create a modern and accessible site for Aotearoa’s varied communities. Phil Grey, the project lead for the revamp of New Zealand’s largest podcasting platform, emphasised the importance of meeting audience needs in a digitally savvy world.
A Strategic Shift for Mobile-First Audiences
The recent revamp signals a strategic change by prioritising mobile optimisation and Te Reo Māori support to better engage listeners on the go. Phil Grey, the project lead, remarked that successful podcast delivery depends on identifying audience expectations regarding where and how to find content.
According to him, as mobile usage grows, the decision to discontinue the development of the existing standalone app reflects a cost-effective move to maximise the web platform’s potential.
“We’ve taken a step sideways with this by focusing on mobile optimisation in favour of the existing accessmedia.nz app. That’ll keep working for most, but we will cease any development, meaning that as devices and operating systems advance, the app will become redundant.” He sees this shift as crucial for enhancing reach and functionality, Grey stated.
Funding Drives Community Media Growth
The improved site, funded by NZ On Air , will enable CAMA to keep delivering community content, as it also features over 1,000 podcast titles in over 40 languages, serving various ethnic groups and achieving more than 1,000 podcast listens daily. The large number of listens daily showcases the importance of podcasts in the lives of many communities in New Zealand.
CAMA’s Role in Fostering Inclusivity
CAMA represents 12 independent access media stations across the country and is dedicated to promoting inclusivity in media. The organisation aims to transform accessmedia.nz into more than just a podcasting platform; it seeks to make it a tool for change that supports community storytelling for years to come.
The 2024 CAMA report highlights the growing impact of community media in bridging cultural and linguistic divides throughout Aotearoa.
CAMA is reaffirming its commitment to making New Zealand’s biggest podcasting platform more accessible, relevant, and prepared for the future. The recent digital shift of accessmedia.nz is ensures that community voices remain heard in the digital era.
