The BBC has lodged court papers in Florida aiming to quash a $5 billion defamation suit from U.S. President Donald Trump. The claim targets edits in a Panorama documentary on his January 6, 2021 rally speech prior to the Capitol riot.

Trump accuses the broadcaster of defamation and trade law violations. The BBC counters that the court lacks jurisdiction, the venue is improper, and no valid claim exists. It notes the programme never aired in the U.S. and Trump’s re-election, including a Florida landslide, proves no harm.

A 15-second clip spliced excerpts over 50 minutes apart. Trump said early on, “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women.” Later, “And we fight. We fight like hell.” The edit read, “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol… and I’ll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell.”

The BBC admitted the cut implied a direct call for violence and apologised, but denied liability. A leaked November 2025 memo sparked resignations of director general Tim Davie and news head Deborah Turness. Trump alleges BritBox broadcast it; the BBC refutes this.

The filing rejects claims of actual malice amid balanced coverage. It seeks to halt pre-trial discovery until dismissal ruling. A 2027 trial is set if the case proceeds.
