Auckland Airport is partnering with Hawkins, a subsidiary of Downer Group, to construct a new domestic jet terminal.
The total cost for the development, which includes baggage handling and airfield improvements, will be $2.2 billion. This project is anticipated to create 2,500 jobs at its peak and will also generate numerous additional employment and business opportunities in South Auckland.
“It’s investment for the coming decades and beyond, creating essential resilience, greater capacity, improved processing for domestic jet travellers and their baggage, and a greater experience for everyone who travels, visits, and works in our aviation precinct,” Auckland Airport chief executive Carrie Hurihanganui said.
“It will also create a boost for the economy, creating a strong pipeline of work for the construction industry, generating thousands of jobs, and an upturn in activity to benefit suppliers and New Zealand’s subcontracting workforce,” she added.
Construction commenced in 2022, and the principal endeavours are progressing smoothly, with more than 23% of the infrastructure initiative finished.
The upcoming phase of development focusses on extending the international terminal further east to create a new domestic jet terminal building. This facility will include a new headhouse and a 240-meter gate pier, offering 44% more processing space for passengers and increasing airline seat capacity by 26%. Additionally, there will be a 10% increase in flexible seating capacity available through bus lounge operations. A significant benefit for travellers will be the short indoor walk connecting domestic jet services with international flights.
“Downer and Hawkins are proud to be involved in this significant project, which will deliver a world-class terminal for travellers, airlines, and the people of New Zealand. Hawkins is Aotearoa’s leading construction business, having delivered iconic projects that have left an indelible mark on the New Zealand landscape since 1946. We also have a proud history of supporting the communities in which we operate and are committed to creating employment and supply chain opportunities for the local community throughout this project,” Peter Tompkins, CEO of Downer Group, said.
The project was expected to be completed in five years, followed by operational testing. The new terminal is set to open to the public in 2029.
