An armed man from California brought chaos to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, breaching security at the Washington Hilton and exchanging shots with law enforcement officers before his swift arrest.

Cole Allen, 34, from Torrance near Los Angeles, faces arraignment on Monday after the incident that wounded one federal agent with minor injuries. Trump administration officials, lawmakers, and hundreds of guests were safely evacuated, with no other casualties reported.

President Donald Trump, attending the event for the first time as president, called for its cancellation. Organisers initially pressed on, but police declared the venue an active crime scene, halting proceedings.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told CNN’s State of the Union that evidence suggests Allen targeted administration figures. “It does appear the suspect was targeting members of the administration,” he said, adding authorities are still “looking to try to understand a motive from our preliminary investigation.” Blanche noted it was unclear if specific individuals were in his sights, but “we do understand that that was his goal and his target.”

Allen travelled cross-country by train from Los Angeles to Chicago, then to Washington, checking into the Hilton on Friday. Refusing to cooperate, his background emerged from interviews and evidence.

“We’ve already started talking to folks who knew him, we’ve already started going through the evidence that we collected,” Blanche said. He taught at C2 Education, a tutoring firm that said, “we were shocked to hear the news of the horrifying incident that transpired at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement to assist them in their investigation. Violence of any kind is never the answer.”

A Caltech engineering graduate, Allen left a manifesto branding himself the “friendly federal assassin” and vowing, “no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.”

There were no prior red flags on Allen, who bought his two guns legally in recent years and carried knives. Blanche praised the response, “overly confident that the Secret Service did their job here. Allen barely got past the perimeter, he was immediately subdued. This is law enforcement doing exactly what they’ve trained their whole lives to do.”

The episode, the third attempt on Trump since 2024, has sparked calls for security overhauls.
