Apple has begun quietly pushing its debut background security improvement updates to iPhones, iPads and Macs, zeroing in on a troubling vulnerability in the WebKit engine that powers Safari and numerous other apps.

The move marks a fresh strategy in the company’s ongoing battle against digital threats, allowing seamless fixes without the need for sweeping software overhauls.

According to a security advisory Apple released on Tuesday, an independent researcher uncovered the bug, which attackers could exploit to let a malicious website pilfer data from another open site within the same browser session. Such cross-site risks have plagued WebKit for years, given its role not just in Safari but in embedded browsers across iOS and macOS apps, making swift action essential.

These “lightweight” patches focus on high-priority components like Safari, WebKit itself and vital system libraries. They roll out automatically to devices running iOS, iPadOS or macOS version 26.1 or later.

In testing phases earlier this year, including January betas for developers, Apple refined the process to ensure minimal disruption. The trial showed it required only a brief device restart—a welcome contrast to the lengthy reboots of full updates.

The firm offered no specifics on the flaw’s discovery or potential real-world impacts, and a spokesperson declined immediate comment when contacted by TechCrunch.

Yet the context is telling: cybersecurity analysts at Kaspersky recently warned that WebKit weaknesses frequently enable sophisticated scripting attacks, while the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has flagged more than 15 related vulnerabilities since 2023, several actively exploited by hackers.

This initiative underscores Apple’s sharpened emphasis on proactive protection, especially after a flurry of zero-day exploits last year. By embedding these background defences, the company aims to stay ahead of adversaries targeting its vast user base.

iPhone, iPad and Mac owners can verify the update’s status through Settings > General > About > Software Update, ensuring their devices benefit from the latest safeguards.
