Apple is reportedly sealing a deal with machine learning company OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into the iPhone.
According to sources, Apple and OpenAI are in the final stages of negotiating contract terms to integrate ChatGPT features into iOS 18, the next operating system for the iPhone. Meanwhile, Apple has also engaged in discussions with Alphabet Inc.’s Google about licensing the company’s chatbot Gemini.
The deal with OpenAI will allow Apple to offer ChatGPT as part of its new artificial intelligence features, which it plans to announce in the coming month during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. However, there is currently no assurance that an agreement will be announced soon.
The three companies—Apple, OpenAI, and Google—remained silent regarding the news.
Recent remarks from Apple CEO Tim Cook have added to the speculation. Last year, Cook said he is personally using ChatGPT but noted that there are “a number of issues that need to be sorted.” He also assured that Apple products will be introduced with new AI features on a “very thoughtful basis.“
During Apple’s earnings call earlier this month, Tim Cook also emphasised that Apple will hold a competitive edge in artificial intelligence.
“We believe in the transformative power and promise of AI, and we believe we have advantages that will differentiate us in this new era, including Apple’s unique combination of seamless hardware, software, and service integration,” Cook stated.
Separately, sources have also reported that OpenAI is developing an AI voice assistant to compete with Siri and Google Assistant.
