$5 million of funding will be injected by the government to help build a new Centre Court roof for Auckland’s Manuka Doctor Arena.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said the investment will assist Tennis Auckland in jointly funding its Centre Court Roof project, which is expected to cost $15 million and is scheduled for completion in 2027.

This marks the first infrastructure investment revealed as part of the government’s $70 million worth of events and tourism project. This initiative intends to boost New Zealand’s events and tourism sectors by supplying fresh funding to draw global performers, sustain current events, and increase visitor numbers in regional locations.

“I’m thrilled our recent support package for major events and tourism will help secure the future of this important sporting asset for Auckland and New Zealand,” Upston said.

“Today’s investment not only future-proofs Centre Court against the weather but also expands the types of events which can be held there, attracting more visitors and supporting our economy.

Upston said the roof upgrade would boost seating capacity and allow more Kiwis to enjoy world-class sporting events.

“This roof will mean more certainty for organisers, players and fans alike, and I love that we’re able to announce baseline funding to support it.”

“This is a first announcement, but local communities and businesses up and down the country will benefit significantly as we make further decisions, particularly around our hugely popular cycle trails.”
