Polestar 5: A new kind of grand tourer

The Polestar 5 is the latest step in Polestar’s journey as a dedicated electric performance brand. Born from the striking Precept concept first shown in 2020, the Polestar 5 takes that bold vision and brings it to life in a four-door electric grand tourer that blends performance, innovation, and practicality.

This is not just another EV. It’s a clean-slate project for Polestar, and a clear statement about the brand’s direction.

The design of the Polestar 5 stays remarkably true to the original concept. The result is a sleek, five-metre-long fastback that manages to look dynamic without being flashy. Inspired by aviation, the shape is smooth and efficient, with a wide stance, low roofline, and a swept-back silhouette.

At the front, Polestar’s signature lighting design includes sharp LED headlights and a low-slung nose that improves aerodynamics. The sides are clean and minimal, with retractable door handles and a flush glass profile. Around the back, a full-width rear light and a built-in diffuser help manage airflow. The car’s overall shape isn’t just for aesthetics; it contributes to a drag coefficient of just 0.24, which translates to improved efficiency and performance on the road.

The car sits low, just 142 cm tall, but smart packaging means rear seat passengers still get plenty of space, thanks in part to a panoramic glass roof, the largest ever fitted to a Polestar. It measures more than two metres in length, allowing natural light to enter and contributing to the car’s sense of openness.

Inside, the Polestar 5 focuses on comfort, sustainability, and simplicity. The front seats, developed in collaboration with seating specialist Recaro, are designed for optimal support and comfort during long journeys. There’s a choice of upholstery materials, including vegan options and high-quality leather sourced with animal welfare and environmental standards in mind.

The rear seats are designed primarily for two people, featuring a central armrest that provides passengers with access to controls for heating, cooling, and even massage functions. When needed, the armrest folds away to create a third seat in the back, turning the car into a practical five-seater. Clever design elements, such as a footwell cutout in the battery, allow for a more natural seating position in the rear.

Materials throughout the cabin have been carefully selected for both sustainability and aesthetic appeal. Recycled and bio-based materials replace traditional plastics and carbon fibre, while other surfaces feature textiles made from waste products such as fishing nets and

PET bottles. These materials are not only eco-friendly, but they also contribute to a calm, modern interior character.

Integrating technology

A large 14.5-inch touchscreen sits at the centre of the dashboard and runs an updated version of Polestar’s Android-based operating system with Google built-in. Navigation, media, climate, and other functions are easy to reach and customisable. A slim rotary dial on the console provides quick control, and a smaller display is mounted behind the steering wheel, adjusting automatically with the wheel’s position.

The sound system is available in two forms, with an optional Bowers & Wilkins upgrade that includes 21 speakers, including units mounted in the roof lining. Ambient lighting enhances the atmosphere, enveloping the interior and culminating in a sound bar positioned between the rear headrests.

Safety and assistance systems are integrated seamlessly. Sensors, cameras, and radar enable the car to see its surroundings, with features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping support available for everyday driving. The car’s SmartZone at the front houses many of these systems, keeping the design clean and uncluttered.

Underneath the Polestar 5 is a brand-new platform developed by Polestar from the ground up. The structure uses bonded aluminium to make it both strong and light. It’s stiffer than many sports cars, which helps deliver confident handling and ride quality, whether on a winding road or a long motorway trip.

Suspension and braking systems are designed with performance in mind, but comfort hasn’t been forgotten. The top-spec model features adaptive dampers that can adjust to the road in milliseconds, balancing control and comfort according to the driving situation.

The car features bespoke tyres developed in collaboration with Michelin, specifically designed to match wheel sizes ranging from 20 to 22 inches.

Power with range

The Polestar 5 comes in two versions. The Dual Motor model delivers quick acceleration and a long range of up to 670 km (WLTP), while the Performance model offers even more power — 650 kW and over 1,000 Nm of torque — enough to go from 0–100 km/h in just over three seconds.

Both versions use an 800-volt electrical system, allowing fast charging of up to 350 kW. This means a typical 10 to 80% charge can be done in around 22 minutes on a compatible DC charger. A display on the outside of the car shows the battery’s status at a glance.

When efficiency is a priority, the rear motor can disengage to save energy, helping the Polestar 5 achieve impressive range figures for a car of its size and power.

What it all adds up to

The Polestar 5 is a performance grand tourer that aims to do more than just go fast. It’s a long-distance car designed for comfort, control, and quiet confidence. It brings together clean design, smart technology, and real-world practicality in a package that feels considered rather than overdone.
