Product Safety New Zealand said that naturally occurring chrysotile and tremolite asbestos were detected in some samples of several Planet Fun brand toys, including “Funkee Animals” and “Secret Menu Stretchee Foodz.”
The affected products include the Funkee Animalz Axolotl Mega PDQ (Barcode: 622222174590), Funkee Monkee Mega PDQ (Barcode: 622222419295), Funkee Animalz Puppies Mega PDQ (Barcode: 622222422288) , Funkee Pig Jumbo (Barcode: 622222170899), Funkee Monkee Jumbo (Barcode: 622222168452), and Secret Menu Stretchee Foodz Asst PDQ (Barcode: 622222168155).
Planet Fun has advised anyone who owns these products to stop using them immediately, seal them in a double zip-lock bag, and avoid disposing of them in general household waste.
Customers are advised to return the product to the store where it was purchased to receive a refund. Proof of purchase may be required.
The toys mentioned were sold at The Warehouse and Farmers between January 2025 and April 2026 and at Toyworld and Paper Plus from February 2025 to April 2026.
Health New Zealand said exposure to asbestos does not lead to immediate health effects. Conditions associated with asbestos typically develop over a long period, often many years after exposure.
“The health conditions linked to asbestos develop over a long period—typically 15 to 40 years.”
“The risk of developing asbestos-related health conditions, such as some types of cancer and lung disease, is linked to the nature and quantity of asbestos and the length of time a person was exposed to it.”
Health New Zealand added that there is no safe level of asbestos exposure, and therefore all exposure should be avoided.
