A2 Milk, which is dual-listed, has initiated a voluntary recall of three batches of its a2 Platinum USA-labelled infant milk formula, produced by Synlait Milk and sold exclusively in the United States, after the detection of the toxin cereulide.
The affected product was distributed via A2 Milk’s website, Amazon, and Meijer stores under the Operation Fly Formula programme.
That programme was launched in 2022 by the Biden administration to bring in infant formula supplies to address a shortage triggered by safety issues at US manufacturer Abbott.
A2 Milk said its US import rights expired on 31 December 2025 and that the product had already been discontinued and removed from sale before the recall process began.
The recall comes after similar cereulide-related product recalls involving major food companies Nestlé, Danone, and Lactalis earlier this year.
With A2 Milk, the recall was triggered after cereulide was detected during additional testing of the product. This testing followed the release of an industry update and guidance from New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries on managing cereulide on April 15. A2 Milk said the most likely source of the toxin was an ingredient used in the product.
The company stated that it has not received any confirmed reports of infant illness or harm associated with the affected batches.
It also noted that when cereulide does affect consumers, symptoms typically appear within 30 minutes to six hours after ingestion and usually involve gastrointestinal effects such as nausea and vomiting, which generally resolve within 24 hours.
A2 Milk said it is in communication with the US Food and Drug Administration regarding the recall and has issued guidance to US customers on what steps to take if they have purchased the product.
The company emphasised that the recall applies only to the US-labelled product, which has a different formulation and ingredient profile from the English-labelled A2 Platinum infant formula sold in Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Vietnam, and through cross-border channels into China.
