How Uber becomes your ‘app for everything’

Uber has announced a new feature that allows users to book hotel rooms directly through its app, marking another expansion in its ongoing effort to turn itself into a single platform for multiple everyday services.

The company has steadily broadened its scope since 2014, when it launched Uber Eats, originally focused on food delivery before expanding into a wider range of retail offerings, including items such as cosmetics and electronics.

The firm will enable hotel bookings through a partnership with travel platform Expedia, which lists more than 700,000 properties. The agreement also includes the possibility of integrating short-term rental listings from Expedia’s Vrbo platform in the future.

The hotel booking system operates similarly to established travel websites, offering search tools, maps, and filters for price, amenities, and guest ratings. Users can complete payments using card details already stored in the Uber app.

“We’re no longer just an app for rides, or even two apps, or a family of apps for both rides and eats,” chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said.

“Uber is now an app for everything.”

“Together, we can reduce the number of steps; we can save people time and money,” Expedia chief Ariane Gorin added.

The development reflects a wider global shift toward “super-app” models that consolidate multiple services into a single platform. This approach has long been established in China, where platforms such as WeChat and Alipay combine payments, messaging, bookings, and other services in one system.

Competitor Airbnb has also pursued a similar diversification strategy. The home-rental company introduced bookable local experiences in 2016 and last summer expanded into on-demand personal services such as haircuts and massages.

It has also launched its own ride-hailing feature.
