Escalating global conflicts are hammering aviation with fuel costs that have rocketed 60 per cent to $3.98 per gallon at major U.S. airports since the U.S. and Israel targeted Iran last month, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Middle East airspace closures have airlines like Cathay Pacific, Finnair and SAS rerouting flights, piling on time and expense, while IATA warns of 10-15 per cent longer hauls.

Fares are surging in response. Deutsche Bank data shows transatlantic tickets from the U.S. averaging $1,059 with three weeks’ booking, up 26.5 per cent week-on-week; domestic and Hawaii routes are climbing too.

United Airlines boss Scott Kirby predicts a 20 per cent annual hike yet sees passengers sticking with it. “Customers appear willing to keep booking even though carriers are passing those high fuel costs along to travelers,” he told reporters in Los Angeles.

Delta’s Ed Bastian reports robust demand, positioning his carrier to claw back costs via sales, while American Airlines’ Robert Isom pledges nimble capacity tweaks. “We’re certainly going to be nimble in terms of capacity to make sure that supply and demand stay in balance,” he said.

America’s record partial shutdown, the second in six months, worsens the pain by furloughing TSA pay since mid-February. With 500 resignations and staff shortages per DHS, queues at hubs like Atlanta and New York top three hours.

Relief may come soon. Senate action and Trump’s backpay order could restore 50,000 TSA staff by Monday, though ICE deployments raise concerns. Analyst Bernstein flags potential screening dips. “Even if this manages to slightly reduce wait times, ICE presence could cause some individuals to fear traveling.”

As investor updates loom, airlines’ adaptability faces its sternest test amid resilient post-pandemic demand, per Reuters.
