Prime Minister Christopher Luxon reaffirmed that his government’s top priority is addressing genuine economic challenges facing New Zealanders, particularly fuel supply and national security risks, rather than pandering to the latest polling fluctuations. After the latest RNZ‑Reid Research poll showed National trailing Labour with just 30.8% support, which extended the gap between the parties, Luxon made it clear that he is focused on delivering results over chasing headlines.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the real challenges confronting New Zealand — like global fuel disruptions linked to instability in the Middle East — require responsible governance and practical solutions, not reactive politicking.

Luxon stressed that his administration is working “very, very thoughtfully” to safeguard supplies and manage the fuel situation so that ordinary families and businesses are protected, even as external pressures drive price volatility at the pumps. He noted that a responsible government must prepare for worst‑case scenarios and secure supply chains rather than get bogged down in polls that bounce from week to week.

Luxon refrained from giving specific guidance to New Zealanders on fuel use, noting that the country currently has “healthy fuel stocks” and is taking precautions in case future risks arise.

“We’re encouraging families to make their own decisions about how best to navigate the pressure that they’ll be feeling on their household budgets for themselves.

“We’ll have a series of escalations should our future scenarios require us to adjust our settings, and that’s what we deal with through our National Fuel Plan.”
