Israel and Hamas have reached a preliminary deal marking the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire plan, opening the way for the release of hostages and prisoners after nearly two years of conflict.
President Donald Trump announced the agreement on Truth Social, stating that all hostages would be released soon and Israeli troops would withdraw to a mutually agreed line as initial steps toward lasting peace. He emphasised that all parties would be treated fairly.
The agreement, brokered with the mediation of Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, includes mechanisms to halt the war, free Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners, and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the deal as a diplomatic success and a “national and moral victory,” while Hamas expressed appreciation for the mediators and Trump’s role in striving for a comprehensive end to the conflict.

The release of hostages could begin as early as Saturday, with an exchange expected of about 50 Israeli hostages for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Trump also hinted at a possible visit to the Middle East soon to support the peace efforts.
While this marks important progress, the deal leaves unresolved issues, including Hamas’s demilitarisation and future governance of Gaza. Trump’s 20-point proposal calls for disarmament of Hamas and establishment of a temporary technocratic Palestinian committee to administer Gaza’s public services.
The conflict began with a deadly Hamas attack in October 2023 that killed around 1,200 Israelis and took hostages. Israel’s military response resulted in over 67,000 Palestinian deaths, widespread destruction in Gaza, and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
This deal offers cautious hope for an end to intense bloodshed and suffering, although much remains to be settled for a durable peace.
