Product Safety NZ announced the recall of multiple batches of Aspect Sun’s Physical Sun Protection SPF50+ and Tinted Physical SPF50+ products.

These two sunscreens, which are widely sold throughout New Zealand, have been urgently recalled following independent testing that indicated they might not provide the advertised level of sun protection.

“Preliminary results received from an independent laboratory show that the SPF level in these two products is unlikely to meet the labelled SPF rating,” Product Safety NZ said.

“A low SPF rating may increase the risk of sunburn during use and reduce the long-term effectiveness of preventing skin cancer.”

The batch numbers for Aspect Sun’s Physical Sun Protection SPF50+ product are A2450, A2190, A1958, and A1492.

The impacted batch numbers for Aspect Sun’s Tinted Physical SPF50+ are A2451, A2191, A1976, and A1629.

The full list can be viewed on Product Safety’s recall page.

The products were available for purchase at over 250 retailers across the country from November 2022 to August 2025.

The recall in New Zealand came after a similar action in Australia, where the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) announced a recall of the same products and batch numbers last Friday.

Consumers were advised to cease using the affected products immediately and to return them to the retailer for a refund. Retailers were directed to withdraw the products from sale.

The TGA also cautioned that more sunscreens could be included in the recall list in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Aspect Sun said it is addressing the situation with full commitment and is focused on ensuring customer safety and product quality. The company is actively cooperating with authorities and taking all necessary steps to resolve the issue.

“As a brand committed to sun safety and skin health, we are not satisfied with these outcomes and wish to act immediately. We have been working closely with the TGA and are now implementing an urgent recall.”
