Lip-Bu Tan, who became chief executive officer of Intel Corporation in March 2025, has recently faced scrutiny after President Donald Trump called for his immediate resignation, citing ethical concerns and potential conflicts linked to Tan’s past business ties with Chinese firms.

Tan, 65, originally from Malaysia, succeeded Pat Gelsinger, who was removed amid Intel’s ongoing struggles in the semiconductor sector. Tan’s arrival initially boosted investor confidence, with Intel’s shares rising about 11%, reflecting hopes for a turnaround under his leadership.

The controversy escalated when Trump labelled Tan “highly CONFLICTED” on Truth Social, concurrent with Senator Tom Cotton’s concerns over Tan’s connections to Chinese companies and their potential impact on U.S. security.

Cotton also referenced a criminal case involving Cadence related to illegal exports to China and questioned whether Tan divested from Chinese chipmakers tied to the Communist Party.

In reply, Tan sent a letter to Intel employees affirming his adherence to the highest ethical standards throughout his career, highlighting collaboration with the White House to address these matters, and reaffirming Intel’s board support for its transformation plan.

Analysts such as Stacy Rasgon at Bernstein see no clear conflict of interest but recognise that Tan’s links to China create challenges amid today’s political climate. Rasgon also suggested Tan’s lack of a personal connection with Trump and recent corporate decisions, like dropping some chip foundry projects, may have worsened tensions.

Despite the pressures, Tan remains focused on steering Intel through critical times, aiming to restore its position in semiconductor manufacturing while upholding strict security and ethical practices aligned with U.S. government priorities.
