Ten years after its initial launch, the Porsche Macan is entering its second generation, marking a significant shift as it transforms into a fully electric vehicle.
This battery-powered version of the Macan is not Porsche’s first foray into the world of electric cars, as the impressive Taycan holds that distinction. However, the all-electric Macan is arguably even more significant, as it represents the zero-emissions variant of one of Porsche’s most popular and sought-after models.
For New Zealand customers, there are four different versions of the Macan Electric to choose from, each offering a unique combination of features, performance, and price. The models available are the base Macan, priced at $161,800; the Macan 4, at $168,400; the Macan 4S, which costs $184,400; and the flagship Macan Turbo, which comes in at $224,900.
The specifications of these vehicles speak volumes about their top-tier electric performance. The Macan 4, when equipped with Launch Control, generates up to 300 kW (408 PS) of over-boost power, delivering impressive acceleration and handling capabilities.
Meanwhile, the Macan Turbo takes things to an even more thrilling level, boasting a staggering 470 kW (639 PS) of power. These performance figures are further highlighted by the impressive torque outputs of 650 Nm for the Macan 4, and an outstanding 1,130 Nm for the Macan Turbo. These high-performance figures ensure that both models offer an exhilarating driving experience, regardless of the variant chosen.
In terms of acceleration, the Macan 4 is no slouch, going from a complete standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds. The Macan Turbo takes that even further, reaching the same speed in an astonishing 3.3 seconds.
The top speeds of these models are equally remarkable, with the Macan 4 achieving a maximum speed of 220 km/h, while the Macan Turbo pushes the limits further, reaching a top speed of 260 km/h. These impressive figures highlight the Macan Electric’s ability to blend Porsche’s renowned performance with the benefits of electric propulsion.
At the heart of this performance is the newly developed Premium Platform Electric (PPE), which includes a state-of-the-art 800-volt architecture. This platform, used for the first time in the new Macan, ensures both high performance and efficient energy usage.
One of the key benefits of this new architecture is the ability to charge the battery rapidly. With a DC charging output of up to 270 kW, the Macan Electric can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in just about 21 minutes when connected to an appropriate fast-charging station. This remarkable charging capability means that drivers can get back on the road quickly, without compromising on convenience or usability.
In terms of range, the new Macan Electric offers impressive figures. The Macan 4 has a combined range of up to 613 km, while the Macan Turbo provides a slightly lower but still highly respectable range of up to 591 km. These figures ensure that the Macan Electric is more than capable of handling long journeys, making it a practical choice for those looking for an electric SUV without compromising on driving enjoyment or usability.
In terms of design, the new Macan Electric boasts a more dynamic and assertive presence, thanks to its enhanced proportions and distinct Porsche design DNA. The vehicle’s stance is characterised by the sharp, aerodynamic lines that convey a sense of movement, even when the car is at a standstill.
The overall dimensions of the new Macan are 4,784 mm in length, 1,938 mm in width, and 1,622 mm in height, giving it a rather commanding presence. It’s fitted with large, up-to-22-inch wheels, furthering its presence. The wheelbase has been extended by 86 mm compared to the previous model, now measuring 2,893 mm.
Inside is an increased level of interior space, designed with a focus on both performance and practicality. Electrification has allowed for greater luggage capacity in the rear compartment, offering up to 540 litres of space depending on the model and configuration. This is complemented by the addition of a “frunk” – a second storage space under the bonnet, which offers 84 litres of capacity.
For the tech-savvy driver, the Macan Electric is equipped with the latest-generation display and operating system, which includes up to three screens. The 12.6-inch instrument cluster, which is curved for a more modern and visually striking design, takes centre stage, while the 10.9-inch central display provides easy access to key features and settings. For the first time, passengers are also able to interact with the car’s system, adjusting settings or even streaming video content via an additional 10.9-inch screen mounted on the passenger side.
One of the standout technological features of the new Macan is the Porsche Driver Experience, which now includes a head-up display with augmented reality capabilities (standard on the Macan Turbo). This integrates virtual elements, such as navigation arrows, seamlessly into the real world, enhancing the driving experience.
Porsche’s Macan Electric blends performance, luxury, and cutting-edge technology to offer a highly desirable electric SUV.
